Practicing yoga, starting up my own yoga business, learning lots of theory, making time for my friends, with a energy level of a turtle.. My life has been quite busy and complicated lately; the reason why there wasn’t much time left for my blog; something I feel really bad about. Fashion, art and photography still are my passions and to bring you gorgeous subjects with my writing is just a dream come true. So, a little more hard work, a little less spare time and a little more blog posts from now on; good intentions which start before the beginning of 2013!
So enough talking about my private life and my good intentions here; it’s time for my new blog post. When I told my facebook friends about my latest blog post, I got a special reaction from a guy who went to primary school with me. He told me about a designing collaboration, which contains high technology, fashion and art. This topic immediately attracted my attention, so I went searching for this project and what I found was gorgeous, gorgeous and incredible, because yes, I may be a fashion and art lover and I may know a lot of things about these two subjects, but I don’t know anything about technology. So a special mind journey began.
Intimacy
Technology company V2_Lab and designing company Studio Roosegaarde, decided to operate hand in hand for a new project about intimacy, fashion and technology. With the technology we are surrounded by nowadays, it’s hard to keep our intimate lifes private, but we also use the present technology to be intimate with our beloved ones. This controversial subject became the main subject of this combined project.
From this main subject the idea of designing dresses, which would be able to be both translucent and opaque, started to form. The intimacy between body and fashion were used to discover the relationship between intimacy and technologie. The closer someone would come to the person who wore a design from Studio Roosegaarde & V2_Lab, the more transparant the outfit had to get; the piece of clothing had to become a second skin.
To create dresses, able to transform from translucent to opaque and vice-versa, the designers used ‘smart foils’, fabric which can transluce by technical controls. When someone takes a picture from the dresses, using his flashlight, the dress becomes translucent. The same thing happens with social interactions; the closer someone comes to the wearer, the more translucent the dress gets.

How it’s made

Intimacy hardware overview: two versions of the H-bridge prototype, 7.4v Li-Ion battery pack and controller pcb.

A finished connector as used in the final dress. The connector has been laminated and reinforced to provide for personal safety and durability.

Testing the working of two foils connected in parallel (both have the first reliable home made connectors).

Intimacy Black

Intimacy Black created with e-foil, photographed against a glass wall.

Anouk Wipprecht working at V2_Lab’s atelier, creating a bag and a dress.

Different shapes were created, to produce an organic look which would still be supported by the foil without destroying it’s properties.

Simon de Bakker and Piem Wirtz are applying an insulating layer of plastic on the connector.

The black e-foil bag is wired and connected.

The hardware is installed in a ball, which fits into the bottom of the bag.

Incredible!!! A big kiss
Thank you sweetie! Big kiss back and a happy new year! Xxx
Claudia, It’s without question a bold and innovative style. Having taken into account the safety and wearability aspects of the material, the designer has tried to systemise the pattern and set up perfect procedures of the dress. Jo
Totally agree with you. The way they handled the security of their models is an absolute prove that we’re talking about professionals here ;).
Happy New Year :).

I wouldn’t want to wear those dresses on public transportation! People sitting close to you, or standing close to you, would be able to see too much! LOL
Haha totally agree with you. Though it defenitely they created innovative designs!
Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! :)
Great innovation – Can’t imagine them being very wearable, but it’s more about showcasing the technology and the artistry in the creation.

I love the mix of disciplines working on this and the animal-like idea of camouflage using technology. There is an elegant simplicity in the styles which brings out the botanical organic quality of the human form. This collaboration and innovation is one of the aspects of being in the Netherlands that I enjoy so much. Congratulations to you all for doing and seeing. Good to see you back in blogworld, always enjoy your discoveries and posts.
First of all thank you so much! Love to be back. Busy time, but I’m determined to split my time over my yoga business and my blog; two of my biggest passions.
I absolutely agree with you on the mixing disciplines. I’m happy to live in an innovative and more and more creative country. It’s like the last couple of years people has been more busy with innovation, fashion, art and technology than ever and I’m glad with it: more to be enthousiastic about and more to write about :).
Thanks for following me along!
Happy New Year!
